Reese stepped next to Pete and Chelsea on the fringe of the picnic. Pete carried his daughter on his shoulders, and she babbled in baby tongues as more people streamed over to the park from the church.

“How was the Tulip Festival?” Chelsea asked Carly, and every muscle in Reese’s body turned to stone.

“So beautiful,” Carly gushed. “I had no idea there were so many kinds of tulips.”

“Which one was your favorite?”

She shot a glance at Reese that sent fire down to the tips of his cowboy boots. “The Fire Flame. Very explosive.”

“That your favorite too, Sergeant?” Pete asked, his watchful eye zeroed in on Reese.

Reese cleared his throat. “I liked the blueberries and cream.”

“Those were the first ones we saw,” Carly said, the enthusiasm in her voice turning down a decibel.

“And after that, they sort of blurred together,” he added.

Pete chuckled and Chelsea playfully slapped Reese’s arm. “Well, it sounds like you were a good sport at least.”

Carly’s wounded look didn’t escape him, and Reese lifted his eyebrows in a silent question: What?

She drew him away from his friends with a pout and a quick nod of her head. “You didn’t like the Tulip Festival?”

“I liked it fine.”

“Did the flowers really all blur together?”

Reese didn’t quite know what she wanted him to say. “All except that last one.”

That coaxed a smile from her. “I thought you were having a good time. Before that, I mean.”

“I was.” He snaked his arm around her waist. “I was with you. I had a great time.”

She narrowed her eyes at him. “You get a pass this time, Sergeant. Next time, though, we do something we both like.” She turned to join the mass of people lining up for food.

“Carly, I liked it fine.”

She spun back to him. “If you say fine one more time, I can’t predict what I’ll do.” She pressed her palm into his and practically dragged him into line.

“Are you really mad?” he whispered as the line inched forward.

“A little,” she admitted. “I really thought yesterday was the greatest day of my life, and now I find out that you were suffering.” She scanned him from head to toe. “Physically and mentally.” She picked up a plate and handed it to him. “Why didn’t you say something?”

He focused on adding potato salad to his plate. “You seemed to really enjoy it. Didn’t want to ruin it.”

She slapped a spoonful of baked beans on her plate, practically splattering them everywhere. “Well, this is ruining it.”

“Only if you let it.” He picked up a wheat roll and knifed butter on top.

She didn’t answer, and he glanced up to find her staring at him. “You’re right.”

“Okay.” Reese blinked at her, unsure of what else to say.

“I had a great time yesterday.”

“So did I.”

“Okay.” She tucked her hair behind her ear and moved down the line. Reese watched her, a keen sense of admiration threading through him.

“Watch it, Sergeant,” Squire said, sidling up beside Reese and taking a scoop of frog eye salad. “I’ve seen that look on a man’s face before, and I’d say you’re fallin’ hard.
